Description: This hike is best done as a 3 to 4 day shuttle backpacking trip. All we can say is WOW!!! La Garita is a seldom visited wilderness in the San Juan Mountains. The hike is absolutely astonishing. Get ready for some serious elevation gain and loss on this hike. The trail gets very close to 13,000'. Additionally, you can make a very short side trip to the summit of San Luis Peak.
Worth Noting: Don't miss the hoodoos - eroded volcanic structures - that line the entire trail. Also, there is quite a bit of grazing done on Snow Mesa. If you are lucky, you'll see some real cowboys in action.

The following two resources are absolutely essential for doing any significant amount of hiking along the Colorado Trail. While hiking the Colorado Trail, we loved the guidebook's detail and the ease of being able to stash the databook in a highly accessible pocket. Do yourself a favor: don't leave home without throwing these two invaluable items in your pack.
